Massandra specialise in Kagor, Madeira, Red Port, Sherry, Tokay and White Muscat. Bottles of Yquem 1865 turned up in the cellars of the last tsar, Nicholas II, and some were offered at auctions of the wines from the Imperial vineyards in the Crimea by Sotheby’s in 1991, 2001 and 2004. In 2001, five bottles were sold for the staggering price of £6,200 each. The wine had been regularly re-corked and was in superb condition.
For the very first time in December 2007 Massadra auctioned some wines in the United States. The sale at Bonhams & Butterfields, concluded one of their best years for sales of fine wines. Simulcast between the San Francisco and Los Angeles salesrooms the sale comprised of more than 1,200 lots, and totalled nearly $1.42-million. Frank Martell, Bonhams’ international director for wine sales is quoted as saying ’Massandra simply does not produce any second-rate wine. With more than 10,000 hectares under vine, it can afford to be selective as to what wines will garner its esteemed label.’
